About Arrowbear Music Camp
Our Programs
Fred Ohlendorf began a tradition of exciting summer musical and social experiences in 1942 when he brought the Long Beach Honor Orchestra to Arrowbear for a week. The foundations of our programs are band and orchestra sessions unique to the age group. Since "Mr. O's" passing in 1986 his daughter, Carole Dockstader, and her family have taken over stewardship of the camp and it's summer programs. Our Philosophy
At Arrowbear we are proud to offer summer camp programs for youth of various ages who love to make music. We focus on creating a healthy, fun atmosphere for anyone who wants to come to the mountains and make music with others in a beautiful natural setting, but some of our alumni have also gone on to prestigious music schools and professional orchestras.A cornerstone of our program is the idea that the musical experience is enhanced by social connections between all of the campers. To this end we involve all campers in the camp activities and have a focus on group musical products. We also work the campers through other camp concerns as a group to create a large circle of friends. Our staff works hard to downplay the competetive nature of many musical and social experiences.
The rustic setting and camp routine encourage thoughtful moments mixed with the music and fun. Campfires add strength to the developing group friendships at the end of every day. As a result when our sessions end the campers know and have regard for each other. This adds up to beautiful music, great friends, and timeless memories.
Our commitment is to give our campers the finest musical and social experience in a group setting where everyone acts with concern for others' feelings, growth and safety.
